Is it safe to give an expense tracker app SMS permission?
It can be, but only if the app reads your messages on your phone, keeps nothing except the transaction details, and works fine if you say no. SMS permission technically lets an app read every text you've ever received, including OTPs and personal chats, so the question isn't whether the permission is dangerous. It's whether you trust what this particular app does with it.

What SMS permission actually gives an app
On Android, "read SMS" is all or nothing. Once granted, the app can technically read your whole inbox: bank alerts, one-time passwords, delivery updates and messages from people. Android doesn't let you grant access to bank messages only.
That's why Google Play restricts SMS permissions to a short list of approved uses and makes apps justify them before they're published. Approval tells you the use case is allowed. It doesn't tell you how carefully the app handles your messages.
Five checks before you tap Allow
- Where are messages read? The safest apps parse texts on your phone and never upload the message itself. The privacy policy should say this in plain words.
- What gets saved? Look for "only the amount, merchant, date and account". Avoid apps that store or upload full message text.
- Are OTPs and personal messages ignored? A good parser only looks at transaction alerts from banks and payment apps.
- Is it optional? You should be able to use the app fully without SMS access and turn it off later.
- Can you leave cleanly? Check that you can export your data and delete your account from inside the app.
When to say no
Say no if the app won't work at all without SMS access, if the privacy policy is vague about uploading message content, or if it asks for unrelated permissions like contacts or call logs alongside SMS. You lose a little convenience and keep full control. Scanning receipts or typing a spend takes a few seconds.
How Balance handles it
SMS capture in Balance is optional and Android-only. If you turn it on, bank alerts are read on your phone, personal messages, OTPs and promotions are ignored, and only the amount, merchant, date and account are saved. The full message text never leaves your device. It understands Indian bank formats today. Everywhere else, and for anyone who'd rather not grant it, the app works the same with receipt scanning and manual entry.
Frequently asked questions
Can an expense app read my OTPs?
Technically, any app with SMS permission can read them. A trustworthy app ignores them and never stores them. Check the privacy policy for an explicit statement before granting access.
Can I give SMS permission and take it back later?
Yes. Go to Android Settings → Apps → the app → Permissions → SMS and switch it off. Good apps also let you turn capture off inside the app.
Does Balance read my SMS?
Only if you turn on automatic capture (Android). Balance then reads bank transaction alerts on your phone and ignores personal messages, OTPs and promotions. The full message text never leaves your device; only the amount, merchant, date and account are saved. You can turn it off anytime, and the app works fully without it.
