Is it safe to upload your bank statements to ChatGPT?
It's not dangerous in the way handing over a password is, but you're sharing far more than you probably intend: your name, account number, address and every merchant you've paid. Depending on the service and your settings, that chat may be stored and used to improve the model.
If you want AI help with your money, you can get most of the benefit while sharing a fraction of the data.

What a statement reveals
- Your full name, address and account or card numbers
- Your salary, employer and other income
- Where you shop, eat, travel and get medical care
- Patterns: when you're paid, when money runs low, recurring payments
What happens to what you upload
AI chat services store conversations so you can return to them, and many use conversations to improve their models unless you switch that off or use a business plan. Policies differ between providers and change over time, so check the data controls of the specific service you use before uploading anything financial.
The bigger practical risk is everyday: chat histories are visible to anyone with your device or account, and a single file contains everything about your finances.
If you do use a chatbot, reduce what it sees
- Turn off chat history or model training in the service's settings first.
- Delete or black out your name, address and account numbers before uploading.
- Share totals by category instead of the raw statement where you can.
- Delete the conversation when you're done.
A safer way to ask questions about your spending
You don't have to send a general chatbot your history to get answers. A budgeting app with a built-in assistant already has your records and can do the maths itself.
In Balance, Ask Balance works that way. Only the words of your question are sent to an AI provider to work out what you mean. Your amounts, transactions, balances and account details are not. Balance then calculates the answer from your own records. If you ask by voice, your phone's speech service turns it into text first.
Frequently asked questions
Can ChatGPT steal my money if I upload a statement?
A statement alone doesn't let anyone move money; that needs your login, PIN or OTP. The risk is privacy: your financial life sitting in a chat history and possibly in training data.
Is a password-protected PDF safer?
Not once you upload it. The chatbot needs the contents to read it, so the protection doesn't stay with the data.
Does Balance connect to my bank?
No. Balance never asks for a bank login or net-banking credentials, and it never links to your bank account. You add transactions by scanning a receipt or payment screenshot, entering them manually, or, on Android, letting Balance pick them up from bank SMS alerts if you turn that on.
