What happens to your data when you delete a finance app?

Usually, nothing. Uninstalling removes the app from your phone, but your account, transactions and receipts stay on the company's servers until you delete the account itself.

Here's how to leave a finance app properly, and how to spot one that makes it hard.

Uninstalling vs deleting your account

Your data lives in your account, not in the app. Uninstalling just removes your access from that phone, which is why you can reinstall later and find everything still there.

To remove the data, you need to delete the account, either from a setting inside the app or by asking the company. Many privacy laws, including GDPR in Europe and India's DPDP Act, give you the right to ask for this.

How to leave properly

  • Export your data first (CSV is the most useful format) so you keep your history.
  • Cancel any subscription through Google Play or the App Store. Deleting an account doesn't always stop billing.
  • Revoke bank connections, SMS access and notification access.
  • Delete the account from inside the app, or email the company and keep their reply.
  • If you signed in with Google or Apple, remove the app from your account's connected apps.

What may stay behind for a while

Even after deletion, companies often keep backups for a few weeks and some records for legal, fraud or security reasons. A good privacy policy says what is kept, why and for how long. If it doesn't say, ask before you sign up.

How deletion works in Balance

You can export everything to CSV and delete your account from inside the app: Profile → Delete Account. Deletion is processed immediately and removes your profile, expenses, income, balances, categories, receipts, recurring bills and preferences. Backups can take up to 30 days to clear. Deleting Balance doesn't delete your Google account if you used Google to sign in. The full policy is on the account deletion page.

Frequently asked questions

Does uninstalling an app delete my account?

No. Uninstalling only removes the app from your phone. Your account and data stay until you delete the account itself.

Can I export my data?

Yes. You can export everything to CSV at any time, and you can delete your account and all backups from within the app.

Does Balance connect to my bank?

No. Balance never asks for a bank login or net-banking credentials, and it never links to your bank account. You add transactions by scanning a receipt or payment screenshot, entering them manually, or, on Android, letting Balance pick them up from bank SMS alerts if you turn that on.
