For Couples
Tracking money as a couple with Balance
Shared spending is where a lot of couples lose the thread — who paid for what, how much the household actually costs, whether you're saving toward the same things.
An honest note up front: Balance doesn't yet offer a shared multi-user account where two people log into the same data in real time. This page explains how couples can still use it well, and where its limits are.

How couples can use Balance today
The practical approach is for one person to keep the household account in Balance — logging shared expenses (rent, groceries, bills, outings) under clear categories — while each partner tracks their personal spending in their own account.
Because Balance supports unlimited accounts and wallets, you can model a 'joint' wallet and personal wallets within a single person's app to see the household picture in one place.
- Keep shared expenses under dedicated categories or a 'joint' wallet
- Use CSV export to reconcile and split totals each month
- Review category analytics together to plan next month
Where Balance falls short for couples
If your priority is real-time shared access — both partners logging into the same live budget from separate phones — Balance isn't built for that yet. A dedicated shared-finance app may suit you better for that specific need, and it's fair to say so.
What Balance does well is give each of you a private, ad-free, bank-login-free tracker, plus an easy way to export and combine the numbers.
Frequently asked questions
Does Balance have a shared or joint account for couples?
Not yet. There's no real-time multi-user shared account. Couples typically have one person track shared expenses (using categories or a dedicated wallet) while each keeps a personal account, and reconcile with CSV export.
Can we both see the same data live?
Live shared access across two logins isn't supported today. You can share exports or review one person's household tracking together.
Is Balance really free?
Yes. Balance is free to use with no ads and no mandatory subscription. Core expense tracking, categories, analytics, receipt scanning and CSV export are all included at no cost.
