A free expense tracker for the US that doesn't need your bank login

Most US budgeting apps start by asking you to connect your bank through an aggregator, then charge a yearly fee once the trial ends. Balance works the other way around: you scan a receipt or add a spend in a couple of taps, and nothing gets linked.

It tracks in US dollars by default, it's free with no ads, and it covers the things that quietly drain American budgets: subscriptions, tips and small card swipes.

Built around how the US pays

  • Card swipes and tap-to-pay, logged by scanning the receipt
  • Venmo, Zelle and Cash App payments, logged from the confirmation screenshot
  • Cash and tips added in two taps, so they stop vanishing from your totals
  • Streaming, gym and app subscriptions tracked with reminders before they renew

Budget by month, even when you're paid every two weeks

Many Americans are paid biweekly, which makes some months feel richer than others. A simple fix: budget against your typical monthly take-home, and treat the two "third paychecks" each year as savings or debt payoff rather than spending money.

In Balance you set a monthly budget and category limits, then watch spending against them live. Receipts show sales tax added at the register, so scanning them records what you actually paid rather than the shelf price.

Your currency, set up for you

Balance sets your home currency from your phone's region the first time you open it, so in the US amounts appear in US dollars (USD) with the right formatting. If you move or prefer another currency, you can switch to any of 140+ in settings.

Frequently asked questions

Is Balance a good Mint replacement?

If you used Mint mainly to see where your money went, Balance covers that for free without linking your bank: you scan or add spends, and it builds category, merchant and monthly breakdowns. It doesn't pull in credit scores or bank balances automatically.

Does Balance work with Venmo or Zelle?

It doesn't connect to them. You can log those payments by scanning the confirmation screenshot or adding them manually, and track them alongside card and cash spending.

Is Balance free?

Yes. Balance is free to download and use, with no ads. Everyday tracking — adding expenses, automatic capture, bills and subscriptions, accounts and CSV export — is free, and it isn't a trial that runs out.

Which platforms is Balance available on?

Balance is available on Android today. An iOS version is coming soon. It's a mobile app rather than a web dashboard.
